Multinational Development of Women in Technology Provides Expertise on Issues of Women and Information Communication Technologies to the World Bank Community
Morrell, a co-author in the report, will lead
the discussion highlighting the issues of
access, literacy, development and design, and
leadership in the knowledge society as the four
critical areas for inclusion of women so that
they become more than just receivers and users
of ICTs, but also help to shape the impact of
ICTs in their lives and the lives of their
families and communities wherever they live and
work.
“While it is necessary that
women benefit from access to technology in the
most rural corners of the world, it is not
sufficient. Women must be fully engaged
as developers, designers, innovators and
leaders of ICTs as well to ensure the breadth
of women lives are fully represented and
addressed,” said Claudia Morrell, CEO of
MDWIT. “Unfortunately, most countries,
including the U.S., have failed to recognize
the importance of ensuring women’s full
engagement in technical fields.
Internationally, this means a lack of support
for women’s education, entrepreneurship, and
advancement in the technology workplace – all
necessary for socioeconomic
development.”
This advisory panel and
working paper are the first step in a strategy
of infusing gender into current mainstream
efforts. MDWIT plans to provide continued
leadership in this area for on-going policy
debate.
